Murray Schill retired from the Edmonton Fire Department (1975-2013) as District Chief with 38 years of dedicated service, passed away at age 67 on March 7, 2021

Rest easy sir.

Retired from the Edmonton Fire Department (1975-2013) as District Chief with 38 years of dedicated service, passed away at age 67 on March 7, 2021, with his loving wife, Donna, by his side.

Murray is survived by his best friend of 24 years and the love of his life, Donna; his brother Douglas; his sister Carolyn Sutherland; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Maryanne Beyersbergen, Nick and Aggie Kumpula, Jim and Marnie Kumpula, Jim Bell, Rose Kumpula, Dr. Iris Kumpula and numerous nieces and nephews.

Murray often thought of those he loved who left this world too soon. They include his parents Norman and Louise Schill; brother-in-law Patrick Sutherland; mother and father-in-law Walter and Mildred Kumpula; sister-in-law Deborah Kumpula; brothers-in-law Dr. Vern Kumpula, Keith Kumpula, John Beyersbergen; niece Faye-Ann Kumpula Laroque and his very dear friend, Bill May, also a District Chief with the Edmonton Fire Department, who recently passed in December 2020.

Murray was a kind, generous, loving and thoughtful person. He loved people and made them feel safe. It is no surprise to anyone who knew him that he would dedicate his life to serving others in his role as a firefighter. Murray excelled playing every sport but his favorite sports were hockey and water skiing. Everyone loved Murray's sense of fun and energy; for a lucky few, he rolled out the red carpet and treated them to his homemade ice-cream and everything chocolate, especially Fudgeeos.

If Murray were here he would thank his and Donna's families, Medicine Shoppe pharmacist Jerry La, palliative home care nurses Janet, Jenna and Samantha, good friends Judy and Ian, and everyone at the Cross Cancer Institute, U of A Hospital, Royal Alexandra and Misericordia hospitals for their unwavering support throughout his illness. Murray was grateful for the kindness his sister in law, Marnie Kumpula RN, showed to both him and his wife in the last few days of his life.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions a Celebration of Life will tentatively be held in the month of September 2021.

In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Canadian Pancreatic Cancer Society or Canadian Mental Health Association to support all first responders afflicted with post-traumatic stress disorder.
