Music has always played a role within our fire service. From 1892 to 2020 consisting of the early marching bands, big band music to our Pipes & Drums.

The earliest known musical ensemble in our fire service was a brass marching band dating back to 1892, called the Fire Brigade Band.

The current big band (consisting of retirees) started out as a marching band in 1963. Some of those audiences and performances included Queen Elizabeth at the 1978 commonwealth games, the 75th anniversary at the Alberta legislative assembly, Duke of Edinburgh awards ceremonies with Prince Edward in attendance, The Edmonton Metro Fire Chiefs convention, The 100th Anniversary of the Dawson City Fire Department. As the group grew and progressed, the marching band grew into 3 separate bands. Their music consisted of Country Gents, Rock & Roll and Big Band Sound. In the 80s, the three bands became one that played three types of music. This Band was then named the Edmonton Firefighters Dance Band. As numbers declined, the band was known as The Big Band.  The Big Band still currently plays for fire department functions and nursing homes. The Band has also won numerous awards over the years. An accomplishment that the department is definitely proud of.

In August of 2016, the Edmonton Firefighters Piping and Drumming Society was established. All members picked up the Bagpipes or Drums for the first time during this year and started lessons. Our Society was also built from the ground up, with knowledge and assistance gained from the Edmonton Police Service Pipes & Drums, the RCMP K-DIVISION Pipes & Drums, Lethbridge Firefighters Pipes & Drums and Calgary Firefighters Pipes & Drums. We have also collaborated with the Strathcona Firefighters Pipes & Drums Association and Leduc Fire Services Pipes & Drums. It is always a joy to blend our bands together at events and perform.

These musical traditions bring another level of pride & honour to the events we attend especially in the fire service or other first responder & community events.

We enjoy bringing the cultural awareness, history & art form around traditional Bagpipes & Drums music to the city of Edmonton, its surrounding areas & beyond.
